Introducing the Torn Collection

Kate Berry - Torn Lands

Using mixed media materials and painting offcuts from my studio, the Torn Collection presents an escape to wild landscapes.

About Torn

Launching in May 2023, Torn comprises of two collections: Torn Lands and Torn Abstracts, with monochrome collage artwork, handmade in three square formats (7.6cm, 15cm, 21cm).

Inspiration

Following the passing of my best friend in February 2022, I found great comfort in nature, exposed to the elements. I read The Salt Path by Raynor Winn and Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine May - two books that I will hold close for a lifetime for offering great comfort during a time of grief. Inspired by these books, I found myself drawn to the wild, raw and unpredictable nature of the British weather, and found great comfort exploring the layered landscapes of the southern British coastlines.

"Life meanders like a path [...] We have seasons when we flourish and seasons when the leaves fall from us, revealing our bare bones. Given time, they grow again." Katherine May, Wintering
"Doing those deeply unfashionable things—slowing down, letting your spare time expand, getting enough sleep, resting—is a radical act now, but it is essential." Katherine May, Wintering

Torn Abstracts are 7.6cm square collages and Torn Lands come in three square formats: 7.6cm, 15cm, 21cm. Inspired by the landscapes, movement and textures of the British coastlines, each collage was created to capture these elements, using painted offcuts, experiments and under-papers from my studio.
